Phil Cohen, LAc, LMTAcupuncturist/ Massage Therapist
Growing up in the Virgin Islands, where tropical fish, flowers, and wildlife abound, I cultivated a love of science and the natural world. As a former high school power lifter, I became inspired to learn anatomy and massage in order to better understand my own body. A bout of digestive issues while in massage school introduced me to acupuncture, and kickstarted a lifelong passion for alternative therapies.
Having just moved from the calm of the Virgin Islands to the hectic pace of New York, I finally understood the d efinition of stress. Full time work and school became my new routine, and facing NYC rush hour crowds twice daily really took its toll on me. I couldn’t eat, which started to affect my emotions and sleep. I thought this was going to be the new normal and I wasn’t happy about that. During a conversation in shiatsu class with a couple of classmates, my teacher chimed in about acupuncture. It had never occurred to me that acupuncture could help digestive issues, or even stress and anxiety, but I figured I’d give it a try. I saw her once a week for one month, and all my sym ptoms disappeared! This was an epiphany, my life was changed forever. It was this interaction that put me on the path I’m on now. I realized I had to learn more about acupuncture so I could help those suffering with the same struggles I had.
The knowledge and philosophies I’ve learned since then has held a measurably positive impact on my life, from help in assisting w ith the birth of my son, to guidance in managing the symptoms of my mother’s macular degeneration. Starting out as an Licensed Massage Therapist, I have always had a special focus on treating the human body as a whole unit, and I pride myself in helping each patient work with their bodies to facilitate healing. Rather than offer a ‘quick fix’ that may not be sustainable long term, I prefer to assist my patients in the creation of new habits, to help their bodies heal naturally and to support their health in the future.
Phil Cohen graduated from the Swedish Institute College of Health Sciences in New York in 2002 with his Associates of Occupational Sciences in Massage Therapy as well as in 2005 with his Masters of Science in Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine. His combined expertise in acupuncture and massage has allowed his patients to achieve a high level of success, especially with musculoskeletal injuries, digestive issues, neurological disorders, stress, and anxiety/depression.
