Let’s talk about the dark-side of conventional weight loss approaches. We need to talk about this because no one else is, especially not your other doctors!

Before diving in, I want to make one thing clear right off the bat. I’ve been working with women on removing the obstacles that prevent them from losing weight for 14 years now. This is NOT about being fat-phobic or fat-shaming.

Some people can be healthy AND have a higher body fat percentage and some can’t. My focus is on improving health and relieving women of the daily health struggles that hold us back from making a bigger impact in the world. 

What if you’re doing everything right?

There are many people (women especially) who, even when they do everything right, can’t get to a healthy weight. So many women I’ve met with are starving themselves not knowing it is having the opposite effect as what is intended. If this is you, read on.

First, what have we all learned about weight loss throughout our lives? That there’s a formula to weight loss, right? “Eat less and exercise more”. Well if it were really that simple don’t you think we wouldn’t have 70% of Americans still overweight?

I’m sure many of you have dieted and lost weight in the past but what happened when you went back to eating normal calories? Did the weight come back on? What about exercise? Have you ever worked out and didn’t lose a pound? Or maybe you gained weight like I did?

When I graduated after 15 years of college, including 5 1⁄2 years of medical school, I was burned out and 20 pounds overweight and nothing was working getting the pounds off. I tried all sorts of diets with some success but co​uld ​never reach my goal and exercise only made me gain weight.

So I understand that there is something more going on that diets don’t address and that in most cases, lower and lower calories are doing more harm than good. Low calorie diets make us fat! Why are there more and more diets, prescription drugs, and surgeries yet Americans are getting fatter and fatter?

Why can’t I lose weight?

I believe people are being led down a dangerous path when it comes to weight loss and it’s ruining our health, our lives, and the lives of our families. I believe even people who need to lose 100 pounds or more are not getting the help they need to lose weight, reverse heart disease and diabetes, and live longer and happier.

I’m against band-aid approaches which are all that are offered in the standard model of weight loss and the mainstream assumption that weight loss is simply about eating less and exercising more. Think about the show, “The Biggest Loser”. Did you know that according to an article in the NYT, most of the contestants gained their weight back and some gained even more than before?

There are underlying causes of weight gain that aren’t being addressed. 

Every BODY is different. You have a unique physiology and metabolism. That’s why almost every diet out there works for some but not others.
