Tonic herbs, not to be confused with Gin & Tonics, have long been used by herbalists and Naturopathic Physicians to promote long term health and wellness. With our holistic view on health, we practice preventative medicine versus reactive medicine. Tonics are a great way for us to get ahead (preventative) of illnesses and prime our bodies and immune system to keep us well. Which is why we’re sharing some of the many reasons we love tonics.

“Botanically Speaking”

For botanical medicine in particular, when we discuss using something as a tonic, it means those herbs strengthen and improve the function of a particular organ, body system, or the body as a whole. As a category, these herbs are very supportive, non-toxic (because how could something toxic be supportive of the body?), gentle, and generally taken in high doses over long periods of time.

These tonic herbs often contain nutrients such as minerals and vitamins. To get adequate amounts of these nutrients into the system they commonly need to be taken in high doses. Making the effects of tonics are long lasting, even after the herbs have been discontinued.

Another phrase for tonics you may hear if you hang out with a lot of herbalists is the word “alterative,” meaning that they gently alter the function of different systems and organs for the better. Alterative herbs gently increase your bodies metabolism to better process the  elimination of toxins from your major organs.

Common tonics

Here are some of our go-to tonic herbs. While there are many including some medicinal mushrooms, we tend to favor these herbs:

  • Hawthorne (Cratageus spp.) for the cardiovascular system
  • Dandelion (Taraxacum officinale) root for the liver
  • Oats (Avena sativa) for the nervous system
  • Cleavers (Galium spp.)
  • Nettles (Urtica dioica) for the urinary system

We often recommend these herbs be added to your routine in a more direct route than the common, encapsulated supplement. Tinctures, glycerites, teas, or added to food are more optimal routes.

Tonics and Hormones

We love tonics not only for the reasons mentioned above, but because they have such a profound effect for almost every person who uses them. With the power of these amazing herbs, our team is further equipped to specialize in women’s hormone balancing. When helping our clients we, recommend many tonifying herbs to assist in resetting their hormones. The herbs support the creation of adequate hormone levels and overall support the female reproductive system.
